Hey there! I am so glad you are here! Does choosing a cute and cohesive outfit or outfits bring about an unnecessary amount of anxiety? If you just thought, “Yup that’s me… every time”, you are in the right place. Choosing an outfit should be something fun that embodies your personality and boosts your confidence but also looks good ;) . So without further ado, here are my top 5 tips for picking what to wear for your photoshoot:
Whatever you choose to wear, it should make you feel like a million bucks! If you like your outfit, but don’t LOVE it, don’t wear it. I am a firm believer of when you feel good, you look good… at least most of the time. Sometimes we need a little assistance, but after you read all the tips in this blog post, you will have all the tools you need to be feeling like a boss.
The next tip goes hand in hand with the first one and it’s a simple one: Show up with a good attitude because I WILL SAY IT AGAIN- when you feel good, you look good. Having an open mind and letting yourself step slightly outside your comfort zone and having fun is essential to a good photo session with me. With that being said, every session is personalized for you, from my location recommendations to the way I tell you to pose and interact with each other or yourself (for the boss babes and men out ready to slay their portraits). I will have you #feelinyourself and making strangers wish they were you!
Your outfit(s) should be geared towards your location. Let me explain this better- if you are doing a portrait session in the city, you would likely want to wear something tight and sexy, like you are ready to go out, and yes this also applies to the men out there reading this! (Am I right?) Maybe you prefer the slightly more casual and flowy, loose, hip look- whatever it is, rock it girlfriend! If we are having an adventurous session in a park or in the woods, wear some comfy shoes and some cute clothes that are more suitable for getting a little dirty. My favorite prop to bring along is a hat for some extra variety in your photos- I swear it’s a game changer! This session with my wonderful friend Morgan is a great example. She wanted to use the first outfit for more of a skater vibe with her longboard, and the plaid dress for a more moody/sexy/grunge look in the adorable town of Manayunk. Even though she had two different outfits, we kept her makeup and hair the same and I think the photos came out amazing!
Choose a color scheme for your photos. Do you have any colors in mind for your session (including the colors of your desired backgrounds or landscapes)? Choose one neutral base color, and add one color that you like and works well with the vibe we are going for. Try not to incorporate more than 3 colors in your outfit(s) or it may be a bit distracting from the real focus of the photos- YOU. Planning a cohesive set of outfits for your family can be overwhelming.
So let’s plan it out real fast-(imagine this) think of black, tan, or blue as your neutral base color. With my warm editing style, warmer colors/tones look best in my photos. Add in another color like an emerald green, a dreamy maroon, or maybe a mustardy yellow for your shirt or sweater. Avoid patterns if you can, or choose one pattern as an accent. One of my favorite family sessions was at Pennypack Ecological Trust, and the whole family showed up in these beautiful jewel tones. Their outfits along with the scenery of the park paired so well together, as you can see here. Pinterest is also a great tool to use for outfit inspiration!
I am always here, and willing to help with choosing your outfits, and planning your color scheme. If you are anything like me, you like to visualize your outfits with plenty of time beforehand to change your mind. Feel free to send me some snapshots of what you have if you need some help, or check out some of my other sessions for inspiration on my Instagram www.instagram.com/photodelphiastudio
My final piece of advice for you today is to wear something that shows your personality, this is more crucial than ever for my portrait sessions. Do you have a silly personality and a colorful wardrobe, or a more sophisticated and classy closet? Let’s show it off!!!!! This comes back to my first piece of advice- when you are wearing something that makes you feel good and shows your authentic self, I promise the way you feel about yourself and the way you look in your photos will be unforgettable.
